Meet Laura Sherriffs, founder of Fernweh, who has handmade our beautiful tote and field bags at her studio in Aberdeen. Laura specialises in making waxed cotton canvas bags and is inspired by her own passion for adventure and exploring the Scottish landscape. She uses this inspiration to create high quality, handmade products that bring a little bit of adventure into everyday life.

Laura sources her waxed cotton from Halley Stevensons mill in Dundee which specialises in the production of waxed cotton canvas. Halley Stevensons have been manufacturing since 1864, with their Baltic Works factory beginning life as a jute mill.  Now the only waxed cotton mill in Scotland, they weave a range of innovative, high quality cloth for a prestigious international clientele.

From the Land Cometh the Cloth
Now somewhat of a local celebrity, the Harris Tweeds used in our bags are hand woven on the Isle of Harris and Lewis by master craftsman Donald John Mackay MBE. His weaving shed overlooks the bay of Luskentyre in the south of the island which is famous for its  natural beauty.  We have chosen two of Donald John's signature Harris Tweeds, an earthy green with soft hues of browns, greens, greys or sky blue with hues of lavender.

Featuring High Quality Oak Bark Tanned Leather Straps
Fernweh have sourced their leather used in our bags from J&FJ Baker, Britain's only remaining traditional oak bark tannery which dates back to1862. Their high quality, prestigious leather uses a slow, zero waste process to tan each hide and is favoured by distinguished artisans around the world.
